One in every 691 babies in the United States is born with Down syndrome making it the most common genetic condition. Approximately 400,000 Americans have Down syndrome and about 6,000 babies with Down syndrome are born in the United States each year.
Down syndrome occurs when an individual has a full or extra copy of the the 21st chromosome, resulting in the presence of 47 chromosomes instead of the typical 46.

The Columbus Area Down Syndrome Support Group is a support network that informs and educates parents, self-advocates, family members, professionals, and friends of individuals with Down syndrome. We are committed to raising awareness of Down syndrome and promoting an inclusive culture where all people with Down syndrome are valued participants in the social, recreational, educational and economic opportunities in the communities we serve.
The Columbus Area Down Syndrome Support Group operates under the fiduciary of The Arc of Bartholomew County. Founded in 1955, The Arc of Barholomew County is a non-profit 501(c)3 organization that provides advocacy and resources to individuals and their families in Bartholomew County.
The Annual Columbus Area Down Syndrome Support Group Buddy Walk will be held on Saturday October 5th at Donner Park Shelter in Columbus, Indiana. Please join us as we celebrate National Down Syndrome Awareness month and help us by taking steps for a brighter tomorrow for individuals with Down syndrome.
